TSS Visa English Requirements

The English language requirements for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in Australia vary depending on the stream under which you are applying. Here are the general requirements:

  1. Medium-term stream (subclass 482 visa):

For this stream, applicants must demonstrate vocational English proficiency unless exempt. Vocational English proficiency generally means having a moderate level of English language skills. Accepted English language tests include:

    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • Occupational English Test (OET)
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) test (not the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) (from January 2015) test)
  2. Short-term stream (subclass 482 visa):

For this stream, applicants must demonstrate at least competent English proficiency unless exempt. Competent English proficiency generally means having a functional level of English language skills. The accepted English language tests are the same as those for the medium-term stream.

  3. Labour Agreement stream:

English language requirements may vary depending on the terms of the Labour Agreement. Applicants should refer to the specific requirements outlined in the agreement.

It's important to check the Department of Home Affairs website or consult with a registered migration agent for the most up-to-date information, as requirements may change over time.
